Hôtel Mercure - Oceanide La Rochelle
Hôtel Mercure - Oceanide
This hotel is part of the Mercure chain and has therefore been selected for its ideal location as opposed to any innate French-ness. Situated between the historic town and the new port, it's a great spot to explore bustling La Rochelle and near enough to venture onto the island of Ile de Ré.
Situated by the marina, the Hotel Océanide is a large, bustling hotel. Its 123 modern, air-conditioned rooms have a nautical style, decorated to resemble boat cabins. Continuing this theme, there's an aquarium directly next door that's well worth a visit, particularly if you've got children in tow. You're only a few minutes from the old town of La Rochelle so make the most of your time here as it's a lovely place whose streets are dotted with craft shops and pavement cafés.
We'd recommend adding a couple of extra nights here at the end of your holiday as the Ile de Ré is easily accessible from La Rochelle - an hour's leisurely cycling using the bridge spanning the water will get you there, or there's a regular boat launch not far from the hotel. Once on this tranquil island, you can search out a peaceful sandy cove for a spot of sunbathing, or enjoy some local seafood to keep your energy levels up!
You can relax in the Cap Horn bar upon entering the hotel, before moving upstairs to the restaurant. The table d’hôte menu offers a good choice but can be substituted with the à la carte menu. As you'd expect, there's plenty of seafood on offer, but one of the main attractions here is the stunning view from the panoramic windows where you can watch the evening unfurl in the streets of La Rochelle.
