Valleys of the Rugged South

Dramatic landscapes and remote beauty

Normal

Valleys of the Rugged South

Recommended in the Telegraph's Top 10 Activity Holidays in France for 2015, this is a moderate walk through stunning and dramatic scenery: steep tree covered slopes, cascading streams and remote, granite strewn plains. Experience the majestic beauty of this region without too much exertion.

Recommended by Anthony Peregrine in the Telegraph's Top 10 Activity Holidays in France for 2015. Anthony writes:
“It’s a wild stretch of rugged geography and hard history - but also more rounded, more accessible, more granitic than mightier French mountains. Belle France has a cracking trek up, down and around the region, which takes in remote hill paths, splendid valleys and tough little villages like Le Pont-de-Montvert.”

This holiday includes taxi transfer and day trips forming loops that can't be shown in the map below. Consequently the outline is approximate and for a rough indication only. Please call for more details.

    Villefort to Cubières day 2

    Summary

Much of today’s walk is spent on woodland tracks following the GR 68 walking route. Pass through pretty hilltop villages with frequent panoramic views. Stay at the Hôtel Bargeton.

This is a genuinely friendly and charming little hotel in the tiny village of Cubières. Ideal for a real taste of ‘La France profonde’. There is a very real sense of ‘getting away from it all’ here, although the accommodation is very comfortable and the food excellent.

Cubières really is a tiny, one horse village. Well, actually, the horse is a donkey, and can be seen roaming freely through the quiet streets and enjoying a fine meal courtesy of the villagers’ gardens! You can’t miss the hotel here, it’s the only one in the village and is also the only bar and restaurant. It’s a really friendly place and M Massador and his family will always find time for a chat. The bedrooms have all been refurbished and are modern and comfortable. There’s not much to explore in Cubières. There’s a baker and butcher, also owned by the Massador family. There’s also a pretty church and, of course, outstanding country on all sides.

    Facilities

    • Really friendly welcome from everyone
    • Pretty, tranquil village location
    • Stylish restaurant with very fine food
    • Modern, comfortable bedrooms

    Cuisine

We arrived at the hotel after the walk from Villefort and really enjoyed a couple of ice cold beers on the little terrace in front of the hotel. A great spot to watch the world go by! Although Cubières is the archetypal sleepy village, the food here belongs to the premier league. We were quite surprised to come across such a comfortable stylish restaurant with such fine food in so quiet a village. Monsieur Massador also provided the best picnic of our trip for the walk to Pont de Montvert, half a baguette stuffed with Roquefort and some delicious fresh nectarines.

Day trip from Cubières day 3

    Summary

Enjoy a circular route to the village of Le Bleymard, typical of this area and home to several old silk workshops. The industry has faded now, but there is still evidence of its golden age in the large number of mulberry bushes.

    Cubières to Pont-de-Montvert day 4

    Summary

Walk up on to a rocky plateau then by the Col de Finiels on an old roman path before descending into the Tarn valley. The route is very rocky underfoot and takes in some of the famous Stevenson Trail. Tonight’s stay is at Le Merlet, a restored 16th century farm with modern comfortable chambres d’hôtes and a stunning view over the valley.
