On board the hotel barge Mirabelle you will meander your way through the chateau-laden countryside of the historic Bordeaux wine region. Take a trip back in time as we visit all the finest wine-producing communities, passing orchards, meadows and acres of vineyards hugging the winding path of the River Garonne whilst sampling the very best cuisine and first class wines.

This cruise operates in reverse every other week. Excursions, itineraries and tours may be modified in light of unforeseeable circumstances, sailing conditions and tides. Each cruise is unique.

    Arrive Bordeauxday 1

    Summary

    ​You will be met by our guide at either Bordeaux-Merignac airport or Bordeaux-St-Jean train station and escorted to the hotel barge Mirabelle. You will be welcomed aboard by English speaking staff with a cocktail and you’ll have time to settle in to your cabin before your first gourmet dinner aboard.

    Hôtel Barge - Mirabelle Bordeaux

    Originally built in Holland in 1942, the Mirabelle hotel barge has been fully renovated to provide 12 elegant and comfortable twin cabins with en suite bathrooms and air-conditioning. The barge is traditionally finished in mahogany with brass fixtures throughout the cabins and public areas.

    The partly covered deck and dining areas offer fabulous views of the passing countryside. The fully equipped kitchen produces sophisticated fine cuisine and there is an extensive wine cellar menu.

    There are bikes available for guests to use at their leisure to explore the banks of the river.

    The onboard chef embraces the traditional cuisine of the Bordeaux region and ensures all meals make use of the fresh local produce available at the daily markets along the route of the cruise.

    Graves and Cadillacday 2

    Summary

    ​Our first port of call is Graves where the bus takes us into the Sauternes region with tours and tastings at Chateau Guiraud and Domaine Rousset-Peyraguey, both of which are located a stone’s throw from the illustrious Chateau d’Yquem. We take lunch back on board and make our way through a series of locks into the Garonne river where we moor up at the landing stage at Cadillac at the foot of the picturesque Bastide with its 17th century chateau. A trip to the 8th century Chateau de Roquetaillade completes our tours before dinner on board.

    Bordeauxday 3

    Summary

    ​Today, we continue along the Garonne to the captivating city of Bordeaux where you will have a guided tour of some of the city’s architectural gems including Pont de Pierre, St. Michel with its gothic spire and the Grand Theatre. There will also be time for some retail therapy or you can continue to explore this historic city.

    Blayeday 4

    Summary

    After breakfast, the cruise continues on the Garonne river and into the Gironde estuary to moor up at Blaye where we visit the remarkable 17th century fortress designed by Vauban. We also visit one of the finest wine estates in the Cotes de Bourg, Chateau Falfas, for a tasting.

    Bourgday 5

    Summary

    ​Our tour of famous vineyards continues today as the cruise takes us to the Medoc peninsula, home of Chateau Mouton Rothschild. We drop anchor at Pauillac and the bus takes us through the vineyards for a tasting at one of the many estates on this ‘Wine Chateau’ tour. Towards the end of the day the barge takes us to Bourg where we visit the museum of horse-drawn carriages and explore the town before dinner.

    Saint-Emilionday 6

    Summary

    Meandering along the Dordogne we moor up at Libourne and venture to the medieval village of Saint-Emilion. Built atop a natural amphitheatre our tour takes in the cellars dug out of solid rock where wine has been made for centuries. Walk through the cobbled streets, past well preserved town walls to the 14th century cardinal’s palace and then to the Eglise Monoloth, Europe’s largest subterranean church with 8th century catacombs and a knight’s tomb. Out tasting today is at Chateau Rochebelle where we also tour their underground cellars before sampling their Grand Cru. This evening the captain and staff host a gala farewell dinner on board.

    Summary

    After breakfast on board, you will be escorted to the airport or station for your return journey home.
