From the picturesque city of Barr, this three day hike around the Mont Sainte Odile will take you from castle to castle on a big sandstone mountain with ever changing terrain, fantastic rocks and forests. The mountain and its surroundings contain evidence of Celtic settlements and is notable for its stone fortifications called 'the Pagan Wall', a 6.2 mile long archaeological enigma.

    Summary

    Arrive in Barr. At the foot of the Mont St Odile, Barr is the capital of vineyards in Alsace (during the mid-July wine festival you can taste over 200 local wines in the town hall). With its twisting cobbled streets, Renaissance houses, flowery squares, Barr is a quintessence of Alsace. Admire its fountains, half timbered houses and sculptured porches. Stay in the 19th century hotel 'Hortensias'. You could start with a massage treatment before diner.

    Barr to Ottrott day 2

    Summary

    Head to the Landsberg castle, well worth a visit. Dating from the13th century, it’s an imperial creation to protect the Abbey Ste Odile. Carry on and have your first contact with the Pagan Wall whose origin is still a mystery. Head towards (and possibly visit) the Abbey of Mont Ste Odile and continue to the remarkable castles of Ottrott, the Rathsamhausen and the Lutzelbourg. Arrive in Ottrott famous for its red wine made from Pinot noir grown on the surrounding 25 km² vineyards. Stay at the Domaine le Moulin hotel for the night. Enjoy the excellent food and the great local wines.

    Climb to the summit of Heidenkopf and arrive at Kagenfels, a ruined castle being restored by volunteers, and Birkenfels another listed ruin dating back from the 13th century. Arrive in Le Hohwald, a relaxed holiday resort and mountain village nestled in a pine forest. If you feel energetic go and see its cascade .     Le Hohwald to Barr day 4

    Summary

    Today’s walk on the forestry paths takes you to the Château du Spesbourg whose wide donjon is being restored. It dominates the valley above the village of Andlau. Along the way, discover the castle of Andlau, a sturdy ruin with twin towers on a rocky spine covered in woodlands. Partially restored, it is maintained for visitors by a committed team of volunteers. Pass through Mittelbergheim, surrounded by vineyards and on 'the most beautiful villages of France' list and rejoin your starting point in Barr. Stay a second night at Les Hortensias.
